This workshop aims to provide a basic introduction to Classical Test Theory (CTT) and related statistical techniques for use with language tests. The emphasis in this workshop will be on simple practical techniques which can be used to evaluate and improve classroom tests.  After familiarisation with some basic concepts, participants will receive step-by-step instruction and be given an opportunity for hands-on practice with sample test and data using Microsoft Excel. Areas covered will include item analysis, test reliability and score distributions. Discussion and interpretation of the results with reference to the test will be encouraged. Participants should have an interest in language assessment, but are not required to have any knowledge of statistics. Some experience of using Microsoft Excel would be an advantage.
