Participants in an online English lesson

For refugees and migrants, learning the language of their host country is crucial to building resilience and integration. Through our Language for Resilience programme, the British Council responds to language needs in different contexts. In Argentina, an innovative approach has been developed to help refugees in the country.

Finding ways to reach wider audiences

We piloted a project to teach Spanish via videoconference to Syrian refugees in Argentina. Taught from our remote teaching centre in Buenos Aires, the classes reach refugees throughout the country. Following a successful pilot, we are now working with the Argentine government to develop a larger scale programme. In addition, an international conference was held in March 2018 in Buenos Aires on teaching language to refugees and migrants. The event highlighted ongoing work in this area, as well as the potential for future initiatives.

Strengthening relations between the UK and Argentina

Through our Language for Resilience programme, we are strengthening relations between the UK and Argentina. The conference highlighted the British Council´s work globally in this area, and brought together UK experts and British Council representatives with Argentine government and civil society leaders, fostering exchange and connections.
