A recent study conducted in collaboration with our UK partner Julie’s Bicycle reveals that 60% of the festivals participating in Circular Culture 2024 have an internal team dedicated to developing and coordinating environmental management. However, many participants identified key challenges in addressing environmental issues at their festivals, including limited internal budget, a lack of clear direction, and insufficient government funding.

Additionally, a lack of knowledge and human resources emerged as a common barrier. This underscores the importance of having access to specialised sustainability training, like the opportunities offered through our programme, providing an invaluable resource to overcome these obstacles.

What our participants say about the training sessions

"The participation of entrepreneurs, festivals, companies, and speakers from different countries, with diverse cultural experiences but common problems, was very positive."

"It was very helpful to have a space to discuss specific issues and open the floor for interaction between projects, allowing us to get to know each other better. It helped me recognise some of the activities we were already implementing in our project to protect the environment and resources, while also reflecting on problems and potential solutions."

"The various ways to generate impact and sustainability in each art form were a very interesting experience. Thank you!"

Over the years, Circular Culture has demonstrated how international collaborations, and artistic networks can inspire significant and practical changes toward a more sustainable future for cultural festivals. Festivals selected in past editions have made great strides toward sustainability, not only through concrete initiatives like waste reduction but also by creating spaces for dialogue and reflection on the relationship between environment and sustainability.
