The HE Connects: UK – Americas Partnerships for TNE and Internationalisation call for Brazil and Mexico, launched under the Going Global Partnerships programme, aims to build collaborations and long-term relationships to accelerate activities for the internationalisation of higher education, focusing on the strengthening of capacities and building of strategic relationships to address institutional challenges for international student recruitment, research growth, Mutual Recognition of Qualifications (MRQ), and other priorities in transnational education (TNE). Key expected outcomes include the formalisation of various forms of TNE agreements, the development of bilateral/multilateral spaces for joint research or academic production, and the institutionalisation of exchanges aiming to formalise key relationships and partnerships between applying institutions.

The call will support:

a. Partnership building for the identification of shared UK TNE priorities and areas/fields for internationalisation, or

b. Partnership consolidation for the delivery of mutual TNE plans, joint/dual degrees, or specific activities/programmes for internationalisation. Awards will support partnerships between eligible UK institutions and partner institutions in Brazil and/or Mexico. Proposals should be designed by the Lead Applicant in the UK, with the support of the Americas (Brazil and/or Mexico) partner organisation(s).

Activities delivered under the project should respond to both UK and Brazil / Mexico needs and meet the following criteria:

  • Support and contribute to the national and state systems to support local standards and mechanisms that are embedded in addressing local issues and utilise UK TNE to facilitate national reforms at the institutional and system level.
  • Focus on capacity strengthening to address institutional and regulatory challenges for Mutual Recognition of Qualifications, joint/dual degrees, and other UK TNE priorities.
  • Identify and contribute to clear benefits and impacts for higher education stakeholders including leadership, staff, students, and the wider community.
  • Aim at establishing partnerships that will favour more gender and social inclusion in the higher education sector.
  • Contribute to the country needs through structural and institutional change and correlate with overall Going Global Partnerships programme objectives.
  • Build on the potential for future collaborations and the establishment of long-term relationships.
  • Contribute to establishing and disseminating practices linked to stronger gender equality and inclusion in the respective higher education systems.
  •  Support and contribute to the national and state systems to support local standards and mechanisms that are embedded in addressing local issues and utilise UK TNE to facilitate national reforms at the institutional and system level.
  • Focus on capacity strengthening to address institutional and regulatory challenges for Mutual Recognition of Qualifications, joint/dual degrees, and other UK TNE priorities.

Potential partnership formats:

  •  Bilateral Partnerships:
    - 1 UK HEI and 1 Brazilian HEI
    - 1 UK HEI and 1 Mexican HEI
  • Trilateral partnerships with Brazil and Mexico:
    - 1 UK lead institution + 1 Brazilian and 1 Mexican
  • Trilateral partnerships (in-country):
     -1 UK lead institution + 2 Brazilian HEIs
     -1UK lead institution + 2 Mexican HEIs

Funding

The HE Connects: UK – Americas Partnerships for TNE and Internationalisation call expects to support a maximum of 8 projects for a 12-month period, starting from November 2023.

  • Bilateral projects UK – Brazil or UK- Mexico can apply to a maximum of £20,000.
  • Projects that have trilateral partnerships with both Brazil and Mexico can apply for up to £30,000.
  • Projects that have two partners from the same country can apply for up to £25,000
